There exists a misconception that if you desire a green card, all you need to do to get it is apply for it. This is not that simple. You must meet a series of criteria in order to qualify. Such criteria are strict and only about 1 million people a year (arguably more than 12 million would potentially be interested to apply) receive the sought after green card. You can seek green card through employment, through investment, or by the virtue of being a refuge or seeking asylum. But arguably the easiest way to go is by marrying a US citizen (see the Green Card Definition).

Virtually all other green card application categories require some sort of pre-qualification before you can apply for a green card.
How to Immigrate to USA: Employment Immigration Categories
In the case of employment, you have to demonstrate that you have outstanding skills and abilities or have a US-based employer sponsor you. Not everyone can qualify for the outstanding skills green card because, well, you really have to stand out of the crowd to qualify. These typically include Nobel Prize winners and alike or very successful athletes such as Olympic winners.
If you don’t have exceptional skills or can prove outstanding achievements, your other option for the green card through employment is finding an employer willing to sponsor you. It is rare for an employer to start a green card sponsorship without having some form of an employment relationship with you prior. Most common this involves you working for the company somewhere outside the United States. Alternatively, you may work for the company in the United States while on some work visa, such as H-1B or L-1. In most cases, the employer has to demonstrate to the US Department of Labor and thereafter to the USCIS that the employer cannot find qualified job candidates among American citizen or legal permanent residents.
How to Immigrate to USA: Investment Immigration Categories
In the case of green card through investment, you have to invest at least $500,000 into the US economy and create jobs. This process is pretty complex in addition to being expensive. It is also subject to a two-year review. If the USCIS determines that your investment is not productive to the US economy after two years, there is a chance that your green card will not be extended.

Refugees have to meet a series of criteria that prove that their well-being is being threatened. They have to initiate the process of being declared refugee and spend years outside of the United States in order to receive their permission to apply for a green card. Asylum seekers are in very similar position, except they enjoy the benefit of being within the US. Nevertheless, they still have to prove that their lives are in danger if they return home. They also have to wait lengthy periods of time to qualify and receive permission to apply for a green card.
How to Immigrate to USA: Marriage to U.S. Citizen
Marriage to a US citizen, on the other hand, creates a legal condition that immediately qualifies the immigrant to seek and apply for a green card. As soon as you get married to a US citizen, a green card through marriage is immediately available for you because this category of green cards does not have annual limitations on the number of granted petitions. Such caps (defined and managed by the priority date) may create unusually long green card processing times for other categories of green cards, which may run for decades.

One caveat, however, is that you cannot marry a US citizen for a sole purpose of procuring a green card. That’s illegal. Find a US citizen, fall in love and make them fall in love with you, get married and apply. It really is that simple!
